Summer camps focused on sustainability and renewable energy initiatives are becoming increasingly popular, and one in Maine is currently installing solar panels as part of its shift towards green energy.
According to the Lewiston Sun Journal, the University of Maine 4-H Camp and Learning Center in Bryant Pond will have solar panels on its Lakeside Lodge roof, with the majority on the south side in order to maximize sun exposure.
The new center will reportedly feature a dining hall, classroom space, a museum and a library, along with as much green technology as possible, in addition to the solar panels.
"Whenever possible, we've used local materials for construction of the entire building, within reason," Ryder Scott, the program director, told the news source.
The 103-kilowatt solar panels are expected to generate approximately 14,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity each year, added Fred Greenhalgh of ReVision Energy.
With Maine looking to become a leader in renewable energy, the Clifton planning board recently approved a five-turbine wind project for the town, reports the Bangor Daily News.
