The Renewable Energy Markets Association recently kicked off its new nationwide program to encourage organizations to commit to purchasing renewable energy for the next five years.
REMA's Renewable Energy Pledge Program is recruiting different cities, states and institutions around the country to sign up for the initiative. The green energy organization has already recruited the city of Austin, Texas, as well as Southern Oregon University and Diamond Packaging, among other entities.
According to REMA, Americans purchased more than 30 million megawatt hours of renewable energy in 2009, but the company says the catalyst to producing even more is increased demand from customers for more green energy resources.
The program has a goal of signing up more companies and tripling U.S. purchases of renewable energy by 2015.
When Austin signed up for the renewable energy pledge, the city became the largest municipal government in the country to commit to converting to 100 percent green energy.
The federal government offers financial incentives for green energy development in Texas cities besides Austin, as well, such as the Energy Efficiency Incentive Program in Houston.
