Garfield County, just west of Pomeroy, Washington, recently installed the last of 149 wind turbines.
Garfield began installing the wind turbines in May 2010, as the first step of Puget Sound Energy's Lower Snake River Wind project. Standing 262 feet tall, the wind turbines have the capacity to power more than 500 homes each.
"When you can use renewable energy and continue to farm the land, that's really important," PSE environmental and communications coordinator James Takemura told CBS affiliate KLEW. "It takes very little land out of production. So we're using a resource that's already there. It's a source that we have available and the source is very good in this area."
Takemura added that he expects the wind turbines to be up and running by the beginning of next year.
"I love to look at them. I think they're beautiful. And I think they're going to give Pomeroy a bright future," Pomeroy resident Sharron Ruchert said to the source.
Wind turbines are being built around the country in order to cut costs on electricity by using green energy resources, as the government offers financial incentives for individuals and cities producing renewable energy.
