The country's oldest department store has joined an ever-growing list of retailers that are committing to go green, Crain's New York reports.
According to the news source, Lord & Taylor, which has been an American staple in retail for more than 185 years, will find its place at number 17 next month on the Environmental Protection Agency's list of Top 20 retailers that are embracing clean energy.
The company signed a two-year contract with Green Mountain Energy Co. that states the Texas-based company will provide 100 percent of its energy needs at two of its locations, including its famous store on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. The contract stipulates that the company will provide 13 million kilowatt-hours of wind power every year, the media outlet stated.
"Green Mountain applauds Lord & Taylor for demonstrating leadership in sustainable business practices through this purchase of green power," Scott Hart, president of commercial services for Green Mountain, stated in a recent release.
The list is compiled by the Green Power Partnership, an organization that works to procure green power by providing expert advice, support, resources and tools.
