Electric choices are growing in Pennsylvania particularly due to the implementation of retail electricity competition that occurred on January 1, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer.
According to the news source, residential customers now have the option of purchasing renewable power at the same price or lower than they would have with Peco Energy Co.
"It's no longer a sacrifice to buy renewable power," senior energy-policy analyst with Citizens for Pennsylvania's Future Courtney Lane told the news source. "It makes economic sense, as well."
The Inquirer reports that Pennsylvania's deregulated market allows for customers to shop around for a supplier of power and they are not required to switch from Peco.
Buying green can not only save customers money in the long run due to increased efficiency, but utilizing energy sources such as wind, geothermal and solar power can also help the environment.
Green power in Pennsylvania may also be boosted by a new wind farm, as Delmarva Power announced that it is looking for approval from Delaware officials to move a proposed Maryland farm to central Pennsylvania, according to The Associated Press.
