On Wednesday, July 27, Verizon and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Energy signed a memorandum of understanding that pledged to develop new ways to reduce energy consumption among the information and communications technology industry.
The agreement states that the company will continue its goal to reduce energy use by working with the laboratory in developing a plan for reducing energy consumption throughout the industry.
"Verizon has taken significant steps to become a greener, more energy-efficient company," James Gowen, Verizon's chief sustainability officer, said in a recent statement. "By partnering with one of the top science and technology labs in the world, we'll be able to achieve even greater efficiencies in a cost-effective fashion."
Verizon will work with the laboratory in many areas, including energy management at its facilities, buildings and data centers, and will also work to advance smart grid technologies and the best way to integrate them into energy and communication technologies in homes and buildings.
Verizon is a strong proponent of green initiatives, receiving 21 awards for its sustainability achievements in 2010.
