Wind energy in Canada has experienced a record year, as the country installed 1.4 gigawatts of wind energy capacity.
Compared to the 690 megawatts of wind energy capacity installed in 2010, Canada has made major strides in improving its green energy efforts. Canada is on pace to end the year with more than 5.4 gigawatts of total installed wind energy capacity, which is enough to power 1.5 million homes every year. The province of Ontario also installed a record amount of wind energy capacity, with more than 500 megawatts projected to be finished by the end of they year.
“2011 has been a banner year for new wind energy development in Canada, which means cleaner air, new jobs and local investments for the communities that host wind energy projects,” says Robert Hornung, president of CanWEA. “Canada - and,in particular, Ontario - is emerging as a very competitive destination for wind energy investment globally."
In honor of the recent achievement in wind energy, the Canadian Wind Energy Association opened December 5 trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
