Oklahoma has become one of the leading states in the country in terms of wind power capacity, ranking sixth in the nation with 352 megawatts in newly constructed capacity last year, according to a report from the U.S. Department of Energy.
The department's annual "Wind Technologies Development Report" also indicated that the Sooner State ranked tenth in bringing the wind power portion of its total electricity to approximately 6.9 percent.
According to the Tulsa World, the state's total wind capacity currently sits at 1,482 megawatts, which is good for eighth in the country.
"While the industry as a whole did experience a slight slowdown in construction and installation activities, Oklahoma is powering strong through this," Kylah McNabb, wind development specialist for the state Department of Commerce, told the news source.
West Virginia has also seen a recent push towards more wind power generation, as the total megawatt-hours from wind energy in the state climbed more than 25 percent from March 2010 to March 2011, according to CBS affiliate WOWK.
