Families are now attempting to be more energy-efficient by using solar panels and wind turbines in residential settings, which the Wygant family in Camden, Delaware, recently accomplished by having turbines constructed on top of their home. The family recently finalized construction of two 5-kilowatt wind turbines.
According to local news source the News Journal, the wind power system the Wygants installed on their roof is among the most ambitious residential green energy projects in Delaware, which they are hoping will save them money in the long run.
"In theory, by all calculations, [the turbines] should hopefully offset our electric bill by about 100 percent," Wygant said.
The utility company the Wygants use will be required to purchase the excess electricity for the same price it charges the residence for power, and the family will also earn credit for each 1,000 kilowatts they produce, which can be sold in the open market, the source reported.
Wind turbines are available for purchase for an affordable price, considering the savings that will possibly be accrued from using the energy resource. For example, one residential-use turbine is being sold online for about $600.
