Austin, Texas, was recently the first city to install vehicle plug-in power stations that are completely powered by renewable energy.
The 65 stations were built around the city at various parks, libraries and businesses to power electric vehicles, reported local NBC affiliate KXAN.
"Drivers of plug-in vehicles in Austin can unplug themselves from this country's dependence on foreign oil while substantially reducing their fuel costs and vehicle emissions," Carlos Cordova, a green energy expert, told the news source.
Electric vehicle owners can purchase a $25 six-month card that can be swiped for unlimited usage in a pilot program at any of the Plug-in EVerywhere stations, according to KXAN. Drivers can pay $2 an hour with a credit card if they wish not to participate in the pilot program. Electric car owners can also earn rebates from green energy companies up to $1,500 for the installation cost of home charging equipment.
Energy saving cars were the highlight of many auto shows this year, including the Tokyo Motor Show. With the increase in manufacturing of energy-efficient vehicles, green energy powering stations might become more common, allowing more people to take advantage of alternatives to gas-fueled vehicles.
