In the middle of the NFL season, the Philadelphia Eagles are making plans to revamp their team’s green energy plan with an investment of $30 million.
The Eagles organization is planning what they contend will be the largest solar array in any National Football League stadium and possibly any other major sports venue in the United States, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.
The Eagles eliminated an ambitious green energy plan last year, but are now in the final stages of confirming the latest proposal, the newspaper reported.
The organization is installing panels which will cover the stadium’s top portions and form a roof over some parking spaces, which planners say will not interfere with tailgating activities, according to the Inquirer. The franchise also plans to install small wind turbines atop the stadium, above the two end zones.
"They'll be iconic, they'll be visible, they'll be cool," Don Smolenski, the team's COO, told the Inquirer.
The project is planned to be completed by opening day of the 2012 season. The Eagles are currently in last place in the NFC East division with a 1-4 record.
