Palm Beach County, Florida commissioners recently approved a proposal to change development regulations in order to accommodate 500-foot wind turbines, according to the Sun Sentinel.
The news source reports that a final vote on the development guidelines will be taken on August 29.
The decision by the county commissioners reportedly came as a proposal by Missouri-based Wind Capital Group is still pending approval. The project would reportedly include 80 turbines on 16,000 acres of land near Belle Glade, according to the news source.
The turbines being considered for that project can reportedly rotate nearly 200 miles per hour, with each of the towers potentially generating enough energy to power 400 homes, the news source said.
According to the Palm Beach Post, the changes approved by the county commissioners do not apply to a specific location, but are expected to pave the way for the installation of turbines in the area.
The news source reports that some environmentalists have expressed their concerns over the wind turbines potentially having a negative impact on birds and bats in the region.
