Oregon State University has been recognized as the Pacific-10 Conference Champion by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Green Power Partnership's 2010-2011 College and University power challenge.
The university bought the highest amount of green power in the entire region, at 51,595,500 kilowatt-hours of energy. OSU has won the award every year since 2007.
"We’re glad to see the competition heating up as more and more colleges and universities join the Green Power Challenge," EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson said in a release. "This year’s schools used more than 1.5 billion kilowatt hours of green power, cutting harmful emissions from our air, protecting health and driving demand in the clean energy market."
This year, the challenge included 69 participants from 31 different conferences across the country, and led to an annual green power usage report of 1.5 billion kilowatt-hours, about the same as removing the annual carbon dioxide emissions from more than 132,000 homes.
Oregon State University has a strong sustainability department, and was awarded a gold rating in STARS; the Sustainability, Tracking, Assessment and Rating System, which only a few colleges in the country have received, according to the school's website.
