The northeastern part of North Carolina is gearing up for the addition of wind turbines, including one farm project spearheaded by Atlantic Wind LLC in Pasquotank and Perquimans counties.
According to the Virginian-Pilot, the Atlantic Wind project, which is advancing quickly, is expected to feature 150 turbines on 20,000 acres of land spanning the two counties. The company will reportedly pay farmers like Horace Pritchard $6,000 per turbine per year, to be installed on their land.
For his part, Pritchard told the news source that he will still be able to utilize the land around the base of the turbine, meaning the project should help him maximize his profit from his property.
"I've told people I don't know anything I could raise [legally] that could match that," he told the news source.
Another project, which would be approximately 15 miles away from the Atlantic Wind farm, could include more than 100 turbines on farmland in Camden and Currituck counties, according to the news source. That project is being worked on by Invenergy, which plans to submit applications later this year.
According to a number of recent reports, South Carolina is also considering adding offshore wind farms in order to help residents receive more power from renewable sources.
